Costumes in Game of Thrones
The Game of Thrones TV adaptation inherently includes a visual element which was absent from the novels, presenting an entirely new level of worldbuilding to fill in: hidden insights and clues about cultures and characters within the story that were worked into them by lead Costume designer, Michele Clapton. Based on an exhaustive database of every public statement ever made in the past six years by Clapton and her design team about their work. What local materials are available to each kingdom for their costumes? How do fashions trick down from queens to prostitutes? How does fashion display faction allegiance?

Gender and Sexuality in Game of Thrones
An examination from the position of academic medieval scholarship; comparing and contrasting social patterns of gender and sexuality in real Medieval Europe, in modern society, and in Westeros. Were there homosexuals in Medieval Europe? What were the social patterns of gender, for both men and women? How did they define their sexual/gender identities? Westeros resembles each in certain respects, but is different from either. Beyond the Faith of the Seven, what are the cultural patterns of the Ironborn, the Dornish, and the Dothraki? Were there Trans people in the Middle Ages and in the world of Westeros?

Medieval Economics and Game of Thrones
“Aragorn became king, then ruled wisely and well” said Tolkien. “What does that even mean? What were Aragorn’s tax policies?”, says Martin. George R.R. Martin set out to make the world of Westeros grounded in gritty realism, which frequently means economic realism – the realpolitik of dealing with the realm’s debt crisis and haggling with foreign banks. How does currency work in Westeros? How do economic cycles in a world with decade-long seasons reflect patterns that real Medieval Europe went through across centuries? And why it is absurd for the TV-Lannisters to be broke “because our gold mines ran dry”.

The World of Ice and Fire
Since “A Game of Thrones” was first published in 1996, fans were tantalized by hints about the wider history of Westeros, and brief mentions of the lands beyond it. Nearly 20 years later, these questions were finally answered with a massive sourcebook, The World of Ice and Fire (2014) – presented as an in-universe history textbook, Martin himself estimates that every chapter could sustain a full book narrative unto itself. The World book came out while I-CON was on break since 2012, so now we gather to explain how it was made and examine its revelations, and their impact on the franchise.
