Medieval Marriage and the Social Status of Women in Game of Thrones
Discussing the social status of women in Westeros and in the real Middle Ages, which inspired it. Differing marriage patterns had major effects on the social status of women (varying by region); how there has never been one “traditional definition” of marriage because it changed over time. Marriage is tied to inheritance patterns, which directly affected how often medieval women held political power. Also marriage-related topics of prostitution, contraception, abortion, bastardy, etc. -- How frequently do women in TV-Westeros hold political power compared to book-Westeros?
