Better Learning Through Minecraft
While there has been a trend for education-as-entertainment in computer software for as long as there have been home computers, most games considered educational are blatantly so, stressing the educational aspect hard enough that the entertainment is often lost. In recent years, however, the block-construction-and-destruction game "Minecraft" has attained an unexpected potential as an educational tool, both through the ability to add modifications and extensions, and through the ability to use those modifications and extensions in a wide variety of ways. The panel will explore the ways in which Minecraft can be used as a tool for teaching and learning, while still retaining its flavor of being a game.

Off the Rails: When Players Don't Follow the GameMaster's Plan
While many role-playing games tend to follow the plan that the Game Master (or module creator) set out for the players, it is a common occurrence for the players to do something the Game Master did not predict, let alone plan for, which the Game Master must then find a way to work with or around. The panel will discuss the various ways that players are likely to defy Game Master expectations, and how a Game Master can leverage these detours, rather than fight the players on them, to improve both the game and their players' experience.

From Pumped-Up to God-like: Superhero Games and the Balance of Powers
Whether in comics or movies or novels or games, superheroes have some kind of powers beyond the abilities of regular beings. The scope of these powers range from subtle to world-shattering, and can vary widely, not only between different settings but within a setting. But unlike comics or movies or novels, in games it is imperative that, whatever the power level, it is balanced across all heroes. For a superhero game to be fair, the powers and abilities of any playable hero must contribute in an equally (or at least evenly) meaningful way, or risk the stigma of characters having an unfair advantage or disadvantage compared to others. And because most superheroes' powers are somewhat unique, this presents a greater challenge to the games' creators and to Game Masters than other genres would typically present. While the effects of this are most strongly felt in competitive video games such as Overwatch, they are no less important in role-playing games such as Mutants & Masterminds. This panel explores the unique challenges involved in balancing the powers of a group of superheroes so that, despite the distinctiveness of their abilities, each character's powers, strengths, and vulnerabilities make them of roughly even value to their side or team.

The Rise of D.Va
Among the many distinct characters in Blizzard Entertainment's "Overwatch", the character known as D.Va has developed a following and symbolism that reaches far beyond the game. With her backstory as a champion gamer who became a real-life hero, and as the youngest playable character in the game, she embodies defiance of several stereotypes, particularly in the often highly-chauvinistic (or worse) competitive video game community, so much so that her in-game emblems were worn by many protesters at the recent Women's Marches in Korea. The panel will explore D.Va's significance outside of the game, as a symbol and inspiration to girls and women in the gaming community, both in her home country of Korea, and around the world.

Streaming for Beginners
With advances in the speed of home Internet access, a number of people in various fields have discovered the power of streaming video. Beyond recording and editing and posting to YouTube, a live online streaming service allows anyone to present nearly anything live to an audience. The two communities to embrace this most fervently have been video gamers and artists, who have discovered that there is a significant audience online, looking to watch a good player work through a game they find challenging, or the process by which a favorite artist creates the images they admire. Many of them, especially gamers, now earn enough through viewer donations to do so as their primary source of income. This panel provides an introduction to the services and technology used for streaming live video from a computer to the viewing public.
