Drink Me!
Drink Me is a dark, intense story set in an eerie literary version of the Victorian-era British Empire -- the world of Victor Frankenstein and Count Dracula, of Allan Quartermain and Dorian Grey. Three mysterious adventurers must confront one another, pursue their terrifying dreams, and figure out what to do with six unlabeled magic potions. The conclusion of that tale is up to you.

Three mysterious travelers, all hailing from Victorian London, run into one another at a place of great power and mystery -- the famed Cave of Elixir. Within the cave there are six potions, which could perhaps grant their deepest desires, and they all seem heedless of any price they might have to pay.

Alexander Clay doesn't age and doesn't die -- he's as beautiful now as he was at twenty-five. This wicked immortal has spent heartless decades seducing and discarding a string of innocent lovers. What could he possibily want with a cave of potions and wishes? He already has eternal life at his fingertips, so what could be worth risking madness and destruction?

Vesper Von Eternity lives a life of danger and adventure on the edges of the empire. She's stared down tigers, tamed snakes, studied with mystics and riddled with rajahs. In more "civilized" climes, the public thrills to reprinted accounts of her exploits. But some tragedies can't be averted with fame or guts or brains, so Vesper is determined to claim the magic she needs before it's too late.

Edgar Eakins might have been celebrated for his genius in a more tolerant age, but his obsessions and eccentricities have left him on the outskirts of London society. This shabby, sunken, despised man is rumored to have wrought hellish wonders in his taboo scientific experiments. His true goals, however, remain unknown...

It is no coincidence that these three have come across one another. Now they must parley, and palaver, and gamble their fortunes, and risk their very lives -- and drink.

Better Learning Through Minecraft
While there has been a trend for education-as-entertainment in computer software for as long as there have been home computers, most games considered educational are blatantly so, stressing the educational aspect hard enough that the entertainment is often lost. In recent years, however, the block-construction-and-destruction game "Minecraft" has attained an unexpected potential as an educational tool, both through the ability to add modifications and extensions, and through the ability to use those modifications and extensions in a wide variety of ways. The panel will explore the ways in which Minecraft can be used as a tool for teaching and learning, while still retaining its flavor of being a game.

There is more to a good game setting that just monsters to kill and puzzles to solve. Maps, towns, character, economy, technology, ecology, everything from the price of an apple to the motives of kings is a piece of the world. If the pieces fit together, the game world feels real, coming to life around the players as they move through it. If the pieces don't fit, the inconsistencies can leave players anywhere from confused to annoyed. This panel will discuss tools and tips for building and maintaining consistency keeping a setting alive and interesting.

Your First Time as GameMaster
There is a huge difference, in a Role-Playing Game, between being seated around the table and seated at its head, behind the screen that hides their books and notes and dice from other players. The Game Master's role is the hardest, because they are responsible, not just for one character, but for every character, and every part of the world, that other players encounter. For a first-time Game Master, this difference can be daunting at best, and calamitous at worst. This panel will discuss the experience, and offer advice on how to handle the change in responsibility.

Off the Rails: When Players Don't Follow the GameMaster's Plan
While many role-playing games tend to follow the plan that the Game Master (or module creator) set out for the players, it is a common occurrence for the players to do something the Game Master did not predict, let alone plan for, which the Game Master must then find a way to work with or around. The panel will discuss the various ways that players are likely to defy Game Master expectations, and how a Game Master can leverage these detours, rather than fight the players on them, to improve both the game and their players' experience.

From Pumped-Up to God-like: Superhero Games and the Balance of Powers
Whether in comics or movies or novels or games, superheroes have some kind of powers beyond the abilities of regular beings. The scope of these powers range from subtle to world-shattering, and can vary widely, not only between different settings but within a setting. But unlike comics or movies or novels, in games it is imperative that, whatever the power level, it is balanced across all heroes. For a superhero game to be fair, the powers and abilities of any playable hero must contribute in an equally (or at least evenly) meaningful way, or risk the stigma of characters having an unfair advantage or disadvantage compared to others. And because most superheroes' powers are somewhat unique, this presents a greater challenge to the games' creators and to Game Masters than other genres would typically present. While the effects of this are most strongly felt in competitive video games such as Overwatch, they are no less important in role-playing games such as Mutants & Masterminds. This panel explores the unique challenges involved in balancing the powers of a group of superheroes so that, despite the distinctiveness of their abilities, each character's powers, strengths, and vulnerabilities make them of roughly even value to their side or team.

The Rise of D.Va
Among the many distinct characters in Blizzard Entertainment's "Overwatch", the character known as D.Va has developed a following and symbolism that reaches far beyond the game. With her backstory as a champion gamer who became a real-life hero, and as the youngest playable character in the game, she embodies defiance of several stereotypes, particularly in the often highly-chauvinistic (or worse) competitive video game community, so much so that her in-game emblems were worn by many protesters at the recent Women's Marches in Korea. The panel will explore D.Va's significance outside of the game, as a symbol and inspiration to girls and women in the gaming community, both in her home country of Korea, and around the world.

Streaming for Beginners
With advances in the speed of home Internet access, a number of people in various fields have discovered the power of streaming video. Beyond recording and editing and posting to YouTube, a live online streaming service allows anyone to present nearly anything live to an audience. The two communities to embrace this most fervently have been video gamers and artists, who have discovered that there is a significant audience online, looking to watch a good player work through a game they find challenging, or the process by which a favorite artist creates the images they admire. Many of them, especially gamers, now earn enough through viewer donations to do so as their primary source of income. This panel provides an introduction to the services and technology used for streaming live video from a computer to the viewing public.

Inclusive By Design
For the longest time, many game developers designed their games with a specific audience in mind: themselves, and people like them. But like many things in our evolving society, many developers now seek a wider audience, to make their games interesting and accessible to a wider variety of people, and to move away from practices and elements which deter or even offend members of other groups, particularly of marginalized groups. This panel will discuss ways in which game developers can design their games to be appealing and accessible and encouraging to players from marginalized communities, without sacrificing a mainstream or core audience.

Charity Auction
Every year, I-CON holds a charity auction and other fundraising endeavors to help support a local charity in line with a cause I-CON holds dear. In the last few years, we have lost a number of members, programming participants, and guests to Cancer, so this year we are proud to be donating the proceeds from the charity auction to “Hope & Heroes,” a charity that funds the life-saving work on childhood cancer and blood disorders at Columbia University Medical Center. We hope that the proceeds help these real life heroes continue their important work.

A Younger Audience: Running RPGs for Kids
Running a Role-Playing Game for children and younger teens is often different from running a game for adults. There are topics which are inappropriate, and challenges they won't have the life experience or maturity to handle. At the same time, the opportunity to get into character and explore a different world can be fun, inspiring, educational, even therapeutic, or any combination thereof. This panel explores the unique challenges a Game Master must deal with when running a game for young players, and why doing so is worth the extra effort.
